AN OPPORTUNITY AWAITS 02/18/2010
Just last year we were so stoked to see the National Geographic boat parked just within meters of both the kinder and the primeria of the La Playita schools. Fort and Ellie understood what an honor it was to get their photo taken next to the ship, you could see their pride in their eyes when the camera shutter clicked. Beautiful. Not only is it an honor for us, but also those from La Playita...hopeful of what the National Geographic could bring to our community. Here it is a year later, a step closer to potentially boarding the children onto the respected ship. Ojala! This video above is of the crew members offloading the recycling and boarding on fresh organic produce. I asked one of the local personel assisting as to where the garbage went ..."Was it getting recycled" ...he didn't know But later I spoke with one of the staff memebers of the National Geographic about assisting in the education of the children of La Playita To protect our Mother Earth.......she was very open and thought their would be a chance for a walk on....she would pass on the idea and get back to me. Wow what an honor that would be....and what a potential inspiration to the local youth. How could the National Geographic know of our predicament? For how many countries do they explore and travel...this is only one port. With a little luck, and then some....we will get the local children to get a walk on board to discuss the importance of protecting our Mother Earth. For the way I see it the children are our future. Please keep posted, and your fingers crossed. By the way...if you or anyone you know has a slight input...please help us. The recycling concept thru Yo Reciclo is just now getting well established, our community of Los Zacatitos is into it's 3rd year, with limited avenues to distribute the waste/goods...we have leaps and bounds together ahead of us...to achieve a simple but solid goal of recycling our wastes. REDUCE /REUSE/ RECYCLE...a simple concept that has yet to take hold Unfortunately, I believe even though the National Geographic crew took time to seperate their cardboard, glass, compost, aluminimun, tins etc...the folks that met them at the dock...took it directly to the local landfill, or elsewhere. I hope I stand corrected. Imagine that, if all the boats, yaughts, hotels, tourists knew ........what really happens with the garbage. We hope, and I continue to pray the future of these beautiful courageous children have a better future. It is so simple and obvious.....but somehow difficult to connect the dots. Protect our Mother Earth...she is our common thread that binds us. SIMPLE PLEASURES IS WHERE IT'S AT 02/17/2010
Ellie at La Playita kinder swinging away with her best bud. At this age, these children are so eager to learn and really know how to appreciate the simple pleasures in life...I learn from them daily....and what an opportunity. La Playita kinder es puro espanol, que bueno para nosotros. Andale Ellie! "You Go Girl" FILLING IN THE GAPS 02/15/2010
I have missed several occasions to share, so this is a little attempt to fill in the gaps. El Dia de La Bandera was celebrated last Monday in La Playita, where all of the school children in the community show up...along with the municple police to raise and honor the Mexican flag. The official celebration for Mexico is 24 Febrero. It is a big to do and an admirable way to celebrate their Mexican pride. Unfortunately, this year of all years we missed the ceremony. The munchkins were getting their vaccinations at the Centro de Salud, because both of our children they are able to take advantage of being Mexican citizens, with free health care and vaccinations, and then some. We have had numerous rains, it's been out of the ordinary to say the least, this is my 8th winter here, and my first to see some of the foilage flower so abundantly this early in our spring. The Lupine are back as well as the San Diego Sunflower, and needless to say, several I cannot identify by name. Unbelievable to my eyes, I passed by a cotton plant in La Playita with it's flower bloom open, producing cotton. This I haven't seen since my childhood youth in Oklahoma...classic! Although the flowers are flourishing, it seems around here the birds are not, but I may be getting ahead of myself. Usually, we have so many birds, cardinals, blue jays, oriels, woodpeckers, cactus wren and hummingbirds...Perhaps there is so much to feed off of throughout the blooming desert they don't need to come by the Crain residence as in the dry years in the past. We celebrated a wedding with ou favorite family here in Los Zacatitos, the Lains...and just days ago Fort and Ellie were invited over to make valentines cookies and cupcakes. This community is where people come and go, the summers here can be like a ghost town in comparison to the winter season. We are thankful to make great friends and it's always a nice feeling to have them as our neighbors. It's a diverse community for us between Los Zacatitos and La Playita, where the traditions vary from the United States and Mexico and find their unique ways into our lives...what's that word, eclectic?...taking a little of the best from everything. What could be better than that. FEBRUARY ARRIVES BRINGING NURTURING RAINS 02/04/2010
We received another beautiful desert winter rain this week, what a treat. Already at ages 4 and 6 Fort and Ellie are pretty savy at how to protect our environment, planting trees provides shade, building material as well as oxygen for us to breathe...it's all connected. Just before we planted all of our palo de arco seedlings ...nice timing on the munhckins part, now the little trees have a head start in getting their roots established. While digging and planting they sing their little song "What's it gonna take? TEAMWORK" They are so classic together, never a dull moment around here....what a blessing. During the winter, the rains are all together different than those in the summer. Although we don't get the intense humidities, bobos, dragon flies, butterflies and velvet colorful desert...we do get happy plants and cooler weather. The skies are crystal clear the next morning, it's as if a cleansing has occured, the lighting is incredibly intense...it's breath taking and beautiful. The next day on our normal daily journey into town, some of the roads are as smoothe as butter, while others have obviously seen better days. The first photo below is just behind our place, after this summer we have nurtured a tree to grow in the center, along with the rugged drainage...the advantage, less traffic! Along the coast road we saw a bobcat/lynx cross somewhat slowly in front of our truck. Although I was so stoked to see him/her, the camera didn't make it for the shot in time....at least Fort and Ellie also got a good glimpse of something beautiful and wild. We also hear the coyote nearby, get a glimpse of the red fox, and the random rabbit hopping accross the road which our faithful dogs Rubby, Dora and Thunderbolt gladdlly chase after. In the early mornings we are starting to see tons of whale spray, as they expire their breath at the surface...it's beautiful as the sun is rising behind, the mist is lit up. Today we caught a mama with it's baby just off the shore (within swimming distance) *staying close to the surface...she must of just had her calf and teaching it how to swim...I'm only guessing...I just am always excited to see the return of the whales...yearly they make an incredible journey from Alaska to Baja......and back again.... Mother Nature at her best. |
