"We are at a precious moment where caution must yeild to courage.
It is better to fail at the quest for greatness than to accept our planet's future as only a reliving of the past"

Our Waters are Worth Protecting
The left photo above is titled "Traveling through an Ocean Garbage Dump the size of Texas"...taken from http://seacat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/plastic1.jpg
photo right...just off our coast on the Sea of Cortez. The way I see it, IT'S ALL CONNECTED...the only thing between us is the East Pacific and a few miles of rugged coastline along the Baja Peninsula.
Please feel free to contribute any thoughts, ideas, updates etc on the Protecting our Waters category on the right side of the guestbook page. This no doubt will remain open and an on going discussion.
On August 5th 2009 Al Razutis of LOSZACATITOS.NET sent me an article taken from the Los Angeles paper that I couldn't fathom see http://www.loszacatitos.net/news.html. That day it would be an understatement that I was inspired. This was undoubtedly one instigator which helped me create this website, knowing one day I would include this information for others to be informed like myself, perhaps together we can do something...be it ever so small, together it can be big. INFORMATION IS KNOWLEDGE. Please help me update this information if and when you see fit. What's your response?...see mine below....

THE NORTH PACIFIC GYRE
Notes from 5 August 2009:
It's as if our Mother Earth needs plastic surgery, a means to remove, reduce and utilize what we humans have created and somehow decrease, discontinue the production of polutants that are ailing her. again, SUSTAINABLE LIVING is a visualization that will protect our future for seven generations to come. Together we must chose to use what we have and nurture our nature, protect our waters, soil and air to heal our planet and ourselves.
After reading this article, I had to do a little research myself, unbelievable what have we done? And most importantly WHAT CAN WE DO?
DISCOVERY: Apparently it was predicted by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the U.S.). Their paper was based on results from an Alaskan based research in 1985-1988.
This got more public recognition after it was documented by Charles Moore.
Charles Moore/Natural history v.112,n.9, nov 03
"It was on our way home after finishing the Los Angeles to Hawaii sail race known as The Transpec that my crew and I first caught sight of the trash floating in one of the most remote regions of all the oceans." He goes on to say that most avoid the North Pacific Subtropial Gyre. The great high pressure system in the Central Pacific Ocean. "Fishermen shun it because it's waters lack nutrient to support an abundant catch. Sailors dodge it because it lacks the winds to propel their sails." In his article there is a photo of bottlecaps and other plastic objects visible inside a decomposed carcass of a Laysan Albatross on Kure Atoll, a virutally uninhabited region in the north pacific.
SOURCE OF POLLUTANTS: The Wikipedia talks about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. They say that the floating garbage is "2x the size of Texas" An estimated 80% comes from land based source and 20% from ships at sea. The currents carry debris from the west coast of North America to the gyre in about 5 years, and debris from the east coast of Asia in a year of less.
CLEANUP: In 2008 Richard Owen formed ECC Environmental Cleanup Coalition to address issues of Pollution in the north pacific. Their plan is to modify a fleet of ships to clear the area of debris and form a restoration of recycling labatory called Gyre Island.
It was announced on 1 Aug 2009 by Doug Woodrig, an Oceanic Conservationist that he in conjunction with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography would be embarking upon an expedition to the plastic vortex in order to explore and alert the public of the growing threat of ocean waste. The first ship deported California 2 Aug 2009 with approximately 30 researchers, technitions and crew memebers. The second scheduled to leave 4 Aug 2009. Not only will they conduct scientific research on the impact this has on the marine life, but they will experiement ways to clean up the vortex without harming the aring life in and around it.

Notes from 6 October 2009:
One big movement is go straight to the big companies making plastic, somehow reduce the amount being created...not only does plastic polute but it also requires oil to produce...go straight to the source....
But it is also up to us individally as a consumer...what are the choices we make, every day...
It seems to me we should put a mandatory stop on the use of plastic bags as they did in San Francisco this past year, throughout our villages and nations. If each individual is conscious of their own purchases and their recycling habits, where does your garbage go?..... That would be a huge start. After all it starts at Home. Our families, communities, states and nations can then begin to educate ourselves and our children of the importance of protecting our waters, air and tierra. Thus protecting us of our own ignorant past and create a better future for our children and ourselves. It's a time of crisis and it took us such a short time to get here. What we do or don't do will affect our future, doing nothing is also a choice.
Thank you for your time in reading this information, please feel free to pass this on, help update, edit or add any comments.
Respectfully,
Terri Evenson Crain

http://www.d8externalaffairs.com/go/doc/2931/531899/
what can we do?
seems hopeless from here, but why not limit our use of plastics, that's easy...reduce reuse recycle...it takes oil to make plastic.
no doubt each of us can figure one simple thing we could do to use less, together that can and will result in a signifigant positive impact..it's all connected.
